Apple Releases iPhone Web Apps Directory
October 12, 2007 in Technology by LwEEs
In a move that was already been rumored by several sites over the internet, Apple released a web-apps directory for the iPhone. Almost all of the apps work with the iPod touch but the site refers only to the iPhone as the device of choice to use with this web-apps. Back in January when Apple announced the iPhone they also mentioned that for now the only way to put use third party applications on the iPhone was over Safari web browser, this move upset a lot of people while Apple only replied that it was for the well being of their hardware.
Personally, I agree with all third party software makers, there is no excuse for not allowing third party software on the iPhone other than because of control issues. I also understand that the iPhone is in its early stages and all this functionality may be allow in the future. Nevertheless, there is a great directory of webapps to enjoy right now if you are an iPhone owner, there are over ten categories with hundreds of applications available free.
My favorite so far is Bejeweled by PopCap, since I had to pay for the game when I had my iPod and now these games are not compatible with my iPhone, I find a little joy playing this game even when I can’t have it remember my highest scores or anything like that. There are many Social Networking apps like Facebook, enophi, and TinyBuddy IM, which allow you to monitor your social activities from your iPhone. Many are missing like MySpace, Twitter, and Jaiku, but they may be in the works to be included in the directory.
Other nice web-apps that I didn’t know about include a tip calculator, Vitalist for tracking your to-do list, Miles to track your gas mileage usage, iTrip Smart Scan Station Finder to use with Griffin products. The site takes you to a simple explanation of what are webapps, redirection to Apple Developers Connection where you can learn how to make your own webapps compatible with iPhone and iPod touch, and how to submit your webapps link is provided also. You can leave your feedback about anything from this webapps page, overall making this a great start for you to find whatever is that you are looking for to use with your iPhone.
This is a great beginningĀ forĀ things alike, but we are missing a lot, what about third party application that can be installed natively on your iPhone. I’m not talking about hacks, but about certified applications. What are you missing? Many sites on the web have already touched on this subject, I think there are more great things to come within the next year.
