I Downloaded WoW

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a game that has been out for a while, many people are hooked and I can’t blame them the game is very addictive. I downloaded WoW about six days ago, they have a 10-day trial and since I’ve never play the game before plus I had a little free time thanks to the holidays, I decided to give it a try.

The download was a total of over 7GB (on my MacBook) after installing several gigs, then it requested it’s updates and so on. I created my trail account, then my character, it was great, the only reason I don’t include pictures is to prevent any copyright issues.

I started playing the game and like anything you do for the first time, I was totally lost. The good thing is that the game itself explain you what to do, where to rest, whom to fight, it gives you missions and this weird feeling that you are not alone even when you are alone.[amazonify]B000VJTJNE[/amazonify]

After a couple of hours I have died a couple of times, I couldn’t killed something that looked like an owl or some weird bird. I had a hard time figuring out how to get back to my body when I died the first time and some places where just odd to me. My overall experience was great, I loved the game, and it was the best game of this type that I’ve ever played.

You should be asking yourself by now why I’m talking like I didn’t kept it. You are right, I didn’t. First, I’m not the kind of person that has lot’s of time to commit to games, this kind of game looks like it requires a lot of learning and lot of dedication to achieve anything.

Then there’s this thing about playing in my computer that makes me want to do other things while I’m playing (my wife calls it ADD), but realistically talking, I felt like I was working even when I wasn’t. I’m the kind of gamer that I either need a very simple game on my iPhone or a game console to disconnect from my computer.

On top of all that, this game was taking 7GB or space on my MacBook, it was a weird feeling, like I needed this space for something else. I just needed to get rid of it to make use of this precious space. Uninstalling the game was also easy, just drag two file folders to the trash and that’s it.

Let’s talk now about the real reason why I didn’t keep this game, “the cost”. There is no way to find out how much the game will cost you from the trial, I tried looking for it without success. I had to search on Google “the cost of wow” and came to realize that this would be the most expensive piece of game anyone will ever own.

The game is a subscription-based game, it costs from $14.99 a month to around $80 a year if you pay the yearly subscription. This is insane, the only reason I don’t participate in subscription-based stuff, is because is not a good idea to have your monthly income trapped in some insane subscription that pays you back nothing.

That is why I don’t like eMusic, or Napster, or the Zune, or Gevalia, or Music or Movie clubs, and now the reason I don’t like WoW. I’m the kind of consumer that I like to own what I like, imagine losing your job and the only thing that will keep you from thinking about your misery unemployment check is a subscription-based game. No thank you.

In conclusion, I give the game a 5 out of 5, it has the best graphics you can ask for in a game. It played great on my MacBook, it sounded great, even my wife was impressed. But the only downside makes it the worst, it’s too expensive to play. Do you like WoW? How long have you had the subscription? If you don’t play it anymore, tell us why?
