Starbucks – AT&T Business Deal
February 14, 2008 in Business by LwEEs
Does it really surprise you? When I first heard that Apple was choosing AT&T to be the preferred provider for the iPhone, I started playing with the idea of many other electronics devices hitting the network. Something like MacBooks with integrated GSM 3G connection that you can activate optionally, and the iPod, yeah why not, it could have some streaming or purchasing options a-la Amazon’s Kindle.
Then the idea crossed my mind again when I heard about the iTunes WiFi Store for the iPhone and the iPod touch, I was stupefied by the idea, thinking about free web access instead of T-Mobiles paid subscription. You soon realize that iTunes WiFi and T-Mobile’s hot spot are going to conflict some how.
Think about it, the implementation of the iTunes WiFi option on Starbucks stores is going to be implemented in stages, which means they are using their own hardware instead of T-Mobiles already available hardware. What are thy up to?
Here it is, AT&T was just getting ready to replace T-Mobile and they couldn’t announce it probably because some sort of contract stipulations with T-Mobile. The smart move for Starbucks was not to ditch T-Mobile for the sake of the customers.
Here is my question to everyone, do you think that iPhone users should get complimentary hot spot from AT&T too? So far, it looks like this offer is available only to DSL subscribers, dreaming is not a crime.
Talking about dreams, has anyone ever thought of the possibility that a company like Apple may be interested in buying someone like Starbucks? Of course I know is kind of weird, plus Apple Records wouldn’t be happy, but what if, just what if they decided to merge. Apple would end up with a some sort of record label and coffee shop all together.
