I had a weird glitch on my WordPress install the other day (January 2, 2009), as I was updating a post, my browser stop responding and when I force it to close, when I came back online the post I was working on disappeared. Good thing that I write everything in MS Word (for the spell checker feature) and then post it to the web, I had my copy and I was able to re-post the article immediately. It frustrated me at the time but it also gave me something to do.

I checked my “sql” tables and the post was not duplicated, this means that whatever happened either it dropped my “sql” table for this post or it used the space for the new post since I gave it the same name. I looked around for other issues and notice that my sql database has now 73 tables with lots of entries, I hate when plug-ins that I de-activate don’t take their tables with them.

I poked around the WordPress.org forums for information about what just happened to me and I found myself spending hours looking for people with similar problems. That is a rant by itself, the thing is that WordPress is so famous now that there are hundred of help requests per minute, this is insane, I really wish I knew enough to contribute my time helping them with simple questions.

I concluded that my problem was the versioning functions within WordPress, I think that I must have hit the “update post” button at the same time WordPress was auto saving a version of the changes I was doing. I think that the auto save option is working fine but the fact that it records a version of whatever you have so far is bugged down. I don’t think that any user needs this function, at least there should be an easy way within the Settings>General tab of the admin panel that allows you to disable the auto saving of post revisions.

I searched around the web and found a couple of sites, including WordPress.org that teaches you how to get rid of the function that saves the post revisions. First, head over mydigitallife.info, this is the best explanation I found so far about the subject. If you want to dig a little deeper read this article from wordpress.org, specifically the tip given by member “mystifier” (look around one third down in the thread.)

I have successfully disable versioning on my WordPress install without affecting the auto save feature and it’s working flawlessly now. If you have a better source that explains revisions or versioning in detail, share it with us so that we can keep up to date on this matter. Don’t forget to follow me on twitter, thanks for reading.

I’m happy for all the cool technology related advancements we had this year and for all the new things I learned along the way. After having the best of my years with my family and a stumbling economy, I have come learn how to better prioritize my personal life.

Happy New Year.

While on the subject, how many of you have made your new year’s resolutions? This is the best time of the year to plan ahead on a short term what do you want to accomplish in 2009. I have managed to create a short but doable list of items that I don’t want to miss doing this year:

Health – I want to be more active, not just join a gym. The reality is that almost everyone that joins a gym after a new year doesn’t even last the first couple of months. I want to be more active, get out and do stuff like rock climbing, bicycling, and some sort of sport. If you plan to lose weight, it makes it easier if you are having fun along the way.

Career – Like many people, I want to stop working for someone else. I want to grow my online presence, sell stuff, and do whatever it takes to get to a healthy financial independence. This requires a lot of time-investment, but if you have the right tools, the desire, and your family’s support, you can do great things in a short time.

Financially – Don’t confuse this one with financial independence, the trick is not to know where you are today but where you will be in the future. I don’t want to open an IRA, I want to work for money so that in the future the money work for me. I plan to invest only in items that result in secure earnings, watch out for revitalized real estate market, this is my chance to really make a big return on investment out of it.

Technology – I plan to get deep into technology and green solutions in my life, this can even be a side business. If it’s good for your health and for the environment, it can be good for your pocket too. Don’t spend money on stuff like a water filter, spend money on a water filter opportunity that pays you back (this is just an example.)

Family – And I’m not talking about my wife and kid, but also I’m not talking about doing anything without them. Don’t try to make your family more close to each other, instead remind everyone what is a family. Don’t make a birthday party for one person, make an opportunity for everyone to remember why you are there and why you are needed exactly where you are.

Make this New Year a year of opportunity, don’t look back, don’t listen to those who don’t believe, and listen to those that really matter to you. Don’t forget to go to church, don’t forget your neighbors, in the long run they will be grateful to have you around.

I want to be firm and successful this New Year 2009, and I’m going to do it. If you have a couple of words to share with this community, go ahead, write a short comment for all of us. Thank you for reading.

The idea behind this strategic change is to apply the expenses of my hosted site directly to my business expenses, while having my blog hosted in a more community friendly place. I love Automattic products and that is why I’m sticking to products from this company.

I hope that you can follow me to my new blogging site where I will be talking about all things technology. No main topics or niche markets, join me to talk about anything and everything that has to do with our current technology.

Feel free to choose a feed that fits better to your online interests. Find below shortcuts to both of my sites and their feeds, thank you for reading along for such a long time.

I’m getting really geeky with this post, if you are a web/computer geek this will be boring to you. For the rest of the population that don’t spend hours on the Internet we need to make sure they understand what we are saying. Like text messaging or lingo used in chat rooms the web 2.0 world comes with thousands of abbreviations and words that can get you confused if you are new around here.

Starting with the basics, many websites are incorporating Web 2.0 abbreviations that makes it hard for some to find what they want around the web, one example is the photo sharing/community type site Flickr.com. The correct word would be spelled “flicker”, by dropping the “e” in this word they have created a popular website that it may not be hard to find but surely is hard to spell. The trend is spreading all around the web, take my site as an example, my name is Luis if I want people to pronounce it the way it sounds in Spanish you would have to say Lwees, that is why I selected this web 2.0 word for my site.

My recommendation for you that are not used to this way of putting words, is to find a good web search engine and trust it with your searches. I like Google, if I try to get to Flickr by typing the web address in the browser website bar, I would never make it. On top of that you are risking getting into a fishing site that mocks what you are looking for and get all sorts of spyware or viruses on your computer.

I understand that in the first three paragraphs there may be words that don’t make sense to you, it is my intention to teach you what they mean and other words you will find around the web. Geek is a word that used to be interpreted as something bad, but not anymore, I find to be called geek many times a day and I carry my title with respect and I’m very proud of it. Lingo by definition means; a vocabulary used by a particular group, it may have other meanings but for web interactions this is exactly what we mean.

A chat room is a place on the web where people get together to write whatever is on their mind, usually there are expected by friends or members of the community but a lot of times you can just find a website with your interests and a chat room that you can register and start chatting with people all around the world. Web 2.0 is very broad, in fact is a discussion that lives right now on the web. Some think we are in the Web 2.0 era, while others say that we are approaching the Web 2.0 era.

My opinion is that we are living in the Web 2.0 era and for me Web 2.0 means a phase or transition from the static base of web pages to the fluidity and interaction of websites today. When we first saw the web it was just information on a place or address that gave some sort of knowledge, news, or advertisement, as opposed to what we have now which is rich content that directs you to information interconnected with other people and other countries. This is a concept of it at a very high level and is my personal opinion, I consider myself a geek but an authority that makes definitions standard, take it and modify it as you learn what the is the web.

Right now you are reading a post on a blog, a Blog is a web log that summarizes information, holds diaries of particular types of information, or registers history from a non-official point of view. Is hard to explain, this is my personal believe of what a Blog is, it may mean something else to other people. I love technology and I love to talk about technology, that is why I own a blog and write on it different information that may be useful to other around the technology field.

A post is an article in a blog, and some blogs rely in the community and their questions to display their information. A community on a blog is made of the blogger, readers, contributors, etc. the blogger is the person in charge and maybe the owner of the blog. While contributors are those who have permission to add content to any specific blog, readers are often encourage to participate give their opinions and ask questions. Also, the community and the readers play an important role in the blogger’s life, some readers take an active approach to correct mis-information posted by the blogger.

I can write for months about this very same subject, I’m going to invite you to read some article I found around the web on definition of terms related to what I consider is the Web 2.0 era. The first is from SFGate.com, the article is Web 2.0 Words, and it explains some terms from around the web that you will need to survive when searching and understanding the web. The second is the website socialmedia.wetpaint.com, the article is Web 2.0 Lingo, another source of great definitions that will make your life incredibly easy.

Hope you find this article interesting, let me know if you want more of these type of article in the future and I will work hard on bringing over the best of web and how to understand it. Find more cool information about technology here in www.lwees.com, thanks for reading.

None of them are going to make walk away from my iPod touch, I absolutely love my little device and I want Apple to fix these bugs as fast as they can. I got my iPod touch last Thursday and since then I haven’t stop using it, the best way to review a product is to explore every single one of its features, so here we go.

Negative pixels, that was what I read on some other blog, and is in fact what happened to me the second time I try to watch a video on my iPod. I remember playing video with no problems when suddenly every movie or video podcast will have this annoying bright pixels where I’m sure they meant to be black. I fix this by manually turning off my iPod by holding the sleep/wake button on top of the iPod and then turning it back on. Since I did this I haven’t had this issue again, but wanted to mention it so that you know what to do if this happens to you.

Unresponsive touch features, this does not happen all the time but it does happen, I have noticed it more when I’m browsing the web on Safari. Suddenly I try to “click” on shortcuts or trying to type a password somewhere and it does not respond. It does not have to do with the iPod itself because I can still move around, so I guess is a Safari bug. The fix is to go to the home screen and comeback to Safari and then it continues working.

Resetting to Home without me asking, I found that whenever you try to do two things at the same time it resets back to home screen. This is not within one application, I’ve seen it mostly when I’m in Safari and listening to music and the same time. Suddenly it goes back to my home screen with me touching the home button. The music never stops but I have to click on Safari again and continue with what I was doing. This is the last of my problems they all seem to be software related, I hope Apple fix these minor issues soon.

Now lets talk about some annoyances, things that make me mad because they seem to be dumb stuff that Apple missed. Starting with YouTube, what up with the fact what I can’t log in into my account, it makes no sense, I know that not all videos are available but regardless I would like to be able to bookmark videos on my iPod and see them on my account at YouTube. This is something they can fix in the long run and I hope they do.

The calendar feature works great and I’m loving it, what I don’t understand is what it takes from the iPhone that they decided to disable the adding events function. That is just silly, common Apple thing about it, is an iPod touch, give me the opportunity to touch my calendar the way I want. The Photos application works great, but the orientation of my photos is often off. I fix them on iPhoto but it seems like the iPod feeds from the original, not any other copy after that one, let me make sure I specify that I’m using iLife ’06, maybe iLife ’08 handle this differently.

That’s about it, but let me mention what is missing, Podcatcher, please Apple, almost every single blogger or podcaster is waiting for this. Notes, I happen to be at an electronics store and wanted to write some Camcorders model numbers to research more about them, I had to go to my contact profile, hit edit and then in the notes section write them. This is absolutely stupid, the notes capabilities will make of these small notes on the go the best feature this iPod touch can have. Other small things are Mail, Maps, and other widgets, only because we know they can work on out iPod touch we would like to have them available but one must admit that they are not necessary.

Hopefully you liked this post, share them with your friends. Subscribe to my blog if you like what you see here, you can also follow me on twitter and other social networking sites, just look for LwEES and you’ll find me. I will be doing more iPod touch related reviews in the future, so stay tuned and thanks for reading.
