In case of emergency (ICE) is a program that was created in the year 2005 by paramedic Bob Brotchie (source: Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_case_of_emergency). The main idea is to set special contacts in your mobile device with the initials ICE, with the intention of letting people know whom to contact in the event that you suffer an accident.

The idea came back to my mind because of the recent loss of Adam Finley, a blogger that was exercising in the morning, had an accident and the police couldn’t alert his family right away because he had no ID on him.

While I never met or read Adam’s work, I hope his family is doing well in this time of pain and suffering due to this terrible loss. I am married and have kids, and I walk in the afternoons most of the time without my wallet. I think that we should all have an identification with us at all times, the following is a list of suggestions to keep yourself identified at all times:

Identification bracelets – just by having your full name on one of these can help the police in the search for your family members. These bracelets are often used in the medical field, patients information like heart deceases are noted to facilitate helping somebody in need.

USB keys are being used to store information about you and your family that others can use to offer help, Protect8 at http://www.protect8.com/ brings this idea at a very reasonable price, while you can get any USB device you want for the same functions is of extra help that the device is identify to be for emergency purpose.

Waterproof ID holders, lanyards, or other sport accessories are good to keep at least your drivers license with you at all times.

We never think that something like this will happen to us, but if I was involved in an accident the last thing my family need is to have to report me as missing while the police wonder who am I. Spread the word, have your friends and family alerted of this practice of having an ID with them at all times. Another thing I did for my kids was to get them an ID, visit http://www.kidsafeid.com/ for information about getting an ID for your kids. I put the ID’s inside their school bag, if anything bad where to happen to them while in school or on the way home, at least the police would have everything they need to contact me or my wife regarding my kids.

Share this information with the people in your household, talk about emergency plan, evacuation plan, meeting place or contact person to have one central place where to call in case of emergency. God bless you all and thanks for reading.
