I’ve been fixing computers for some time now, as part of the tools of the trade I have many cables and tools that helps me with the day-to-day task of fixing computers, drives, and other technology. One of the tools that have helped me a lot is a USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA cable from Cables Unlimited that I got at CompUSA, but you can get it pretty much anywhere you can buy computer parts.

This useful tool allows you to plug a hard drive to a computer without having to open it and installing it inside, better for people like me that I only have an Apple MacBook. To add to its simplicity, I can use it even if I’m on Windows XP using VMWare on my MacBook.

This product comes with a power cord with a couple of connectors to use in regular four-pin power connector or Serial ATA Power connector. The head unit connects directly to either IDE 44Pin for 2.5-inch hard drives or IDE 40Pin for 3.5-inch hard drives, alternatively you can use a regular SATA hard drive connector from the head unit to your SATA hard drive.

You can also use this tool to connect an internal CD/DVD ROM externally for testing, the variety of OS’s compatible with this tool is very decent. I’ve used it with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and OS X and they all work ok. I was able to use the Disk Utility application from Mac OS X to format a new 2.5 SATA drive to make it ready for my MacBook, and it worked great.

Back when I got this tool I paid about $25 for it, it is still at this price point except for the manufacturer, which for some reason has it listed at around $50. Talking about the manufacturer, you can find more information by visiting www.cablesunlimited.com. If you have a question about my experience with this product, leave a comment or use the contact form on my website to write directly to me.

For some time now my MS Word application was acting up, crashing regularly and working very slowly. I got tired of thinking that it was “normal” behavior for a Microsoft (MS) application and started looking for solutions. It turns out I was being unfair to MS this time, the problem lied on the Font Validation application that comes with Mac OS X.

When you install applications that brings fonts to the Mac OS X environment they get automatically organized in the Font Book.app. The Font Book.app is located in the Application folder of Mac OS X by default, go and launch it and I will give you some tips to make it healthy again.

Before we do that let me explain a bit about what was the problem, if you MS Word application crashes after you try to Save, run Spell Check, or change the fonts you are using then this is the solution. Keep in mind that this worked for me but if your problems persist then it may be something else, trying this however will not render your MS application unserviceable.

Open the application and simply go the collection column of the application and hit “All Fonts”. Go to the next column, the one with the label “Font” and select all fonts, you can do this by selecting one font and then clicking “command+a” (that’s letter “A”) to select all. Finally, go to the menu bar at the top of your screen and click “File”, then “Validate Fonts” option.

Automatically the application will check all fonts in your computer, if you have any serious problems, those are marked in red, get rid of those fonts immediately. For those marked in yellow, you have conflicting fonts, most of the time this means that they are duplicated.

To check for duplications, click on the little triangle by the name of the font with a yellow mark, until you see a list of the checks the system did. At the bottom is the option that will tell you if the font is duplicated or not, if it is then delete the font.

To make this even faster, in the upper-left corner of the Font Book.app there is an option to see only warnings, by default it shows the option “All”, change it to “Warnings”. Then click on Select all fonts next to the font list and finally at the bottom-right of the application you have a Removed Checked option, click on it and your problems are gone.

Confirm the selection and recheck all fonts to make sure you didn’t miss anything, and restart your machine. Make sure you repair your permissions, if you don’t know what this is check this link. Your MS Word application should behave normally without crashing all the time, if it still do, at least you know is not a fonts problem.

I own a Linux box, I’ve tested many distributions like Ubuntu, Freespire, and Xandros. When I decided to leave the Windows world, Linux was my first option but I also needed to be connected with the reality of our Windows world.

When I saw the great advantages of OS X in terms of being able to have a stable OS capable of running any Linux application and Windows at the same time, I said to myself “this is it.” I’m still thinking Windows could be a great OS, they have the money to put into great programmers and get this OS to kick buts everywhere, for some reason they don’t.

I don’t blame Microsoft for their failures, there is a bunch of hackers around the world making money by bringing down every single flaw on this OS. If this same group were to target and attack OS X, I think Apple would be up for a big challenge.

What you are not going to hear me say or type, is that Linux is an utter crap operating system. In addition, I consider myself an Apple fan-boy, get Linux on a computer and try to install something as simple as flash for your browser, I got it done, after a lot of reading, and it’s not easy.

I love OS X, I’m forced to use Windows XP on my Mac to run applications that I need for the kind of work that I do, and my kids computers all have Linux (one Ubuntu, one FreeSpire). Our friend Torvalds think that because he’s a lousy programmer, sorry I meant to say because the file system in OS X is bad he can call it an utter crap file system.

Well dear, this is for you, learn to have respect to your competitors because if Windows have 93 percent of the market and OS X have 7 percent, where are you? I think any browser in this planet has a bigger user base that any Linux distribution combined. I know some IT people prefer to use Linux servers, and that most web hosting companies preferred them too, but tell me Torvalds, how much was your income from licensing last year.

I’m sad to say this but even Linux blogs are full with stories on how Linux is not anywhere where they would like to be. No user base, no fans, no standards, everything is done via the terminal, and the small group that are making things better must be feeling ashamed of you for being so hard headed.

Steve Jobs woke up one day and realized that if Microsoft could contribute even one crappy browser, one office suite, and a couple million dollars to his company, he could embraced the joined efforts to make things better. Be smart and maybe all the utter crap software vendors in the market will have mercy on you and ignore your words.

I’m not totally upset, I can understand what a fan-boy is, I understand Linus loves his Linux, but common don’t expose yourself like that. Bring on the flame, what do you think about this guy, do you support his point of view or not. Remember one thing, I’m a technology lover, if it’s good and serves me well, I’m using it. Cheers.

Sorry, I had to do this.
