I was checking some old links using a handy WordPress plugin called Redirection (you should try it if you are in WordPress) and I found some old links to Pownce. For those of you who don’t know, Pownce was a twitter like website but with far more functionality, it was a Kevin Rose and associates work and while I was enjoying it, not many people did.

As of December 15, 2008, Pownce closed it doors and the guys at Six Apart took over the project but as of today they haven’t do much with it. Which means, the site still down and there’s nothing else to see except a note from the team. Back to the why I’m mentioning this, my site had a link to pownce.com and this is not smart, many networking site are going to be created and will be gone in the next couple of years and I must do something about these links.

One site that I use a lot is twitter, I mention twitter almost on every post, and this practice has to stop as well. I had an idea for a while but it wasn’t until I saw Elliott Back’s website that it hit me, he created a “Social” page with all his social networking links, giving him the option to direct people to this page and no matter how many times the social networks change, that will not affect his links on his posts because ideally the page will always be there.

The “Social” page is a tremendous idea, fascinating, I really love the concept and it doesn’t matter how you work out its implementation, as long as you have one, your links are covered. Elliot has Facebook updates, flickr photos, and other links on this page and it makes his site looks so professional and organized that I, in fact, will be copying his idea.

I’m looking forward to finish my “Social” page and even more, I would love to see a plugin for WordPress that allows you to easily create a page with all your social bookmarks. What is your social networking strategy? Do you have a dedicated page? Or dedicated links on your site? Share your thoughts with the community by leaving your comments on this post, thanks for stopping by.

I getting deeply involved in social media or social networking and its integration with business blogging, so much that I have a great number of friends on places like Twitter and Facebook compared to what I had a couple of months ago. The other day I had a Twitter update from a Japanese friend in Japanese language, he’s Twits are often in English but this one was not, I immediately asked myself is this a problem or not to my followers.

My native language is Spanish and I have a large number of Spanish-speaking friends along with my English-speaking friends. I started wondering how much of an annoyance is for my Spanish-speaking friends to see posts in English and vice-versa. Is it time to split these two groups?

I’ve been blogging for a while now, and all this time I’ve been blogging in English, when my Spanish-speaking friends visit my blog they know what to expect, but when dealing with social media, with social networking tools like Facebook I’m not sure how to react to this line of thinking.

I got a couple of ideas but they are not easy to implement, one could create two profiles for sites like Facebook but there is not way to do that using one email account. Other site like Twitter and MySpace also does not allow more than one profile per email address.

You can create multiple profiles by using different email accounts but how efficient is this when what you are really trying to do is to have all your friends in one place. Maybe I’m just over-thinking this, I’m really worried about the net results of me trying to integrate social media into my business ventures.

I use the WordPress platform for my website and while there are some plug-ins that allows you to host multiple languages of your site, none of them easily can distinguish between Spanish-speaking or English-speaking people that visit your site.

I need to now what you think, I want to know how this affects my intentions of having a single space for both my personal social interaction and my business social networks. Please, stop by my forums and leave a note on this discussion, tell me about the way to feel when you see multi-language posts on your friend’s sites.

You can visit the forum post for this article to expand on this topic, remember that the more I know the better I can serve both clients and friends. Thanks for visiting my site and don’t forget to add me on your Twitter feed or your Facebook profile.

The main use of twitter has been described as the office water cooler, which is where you stop to take a break and talk to others.

Much like Facebook, twitter is causing sensation, everyone in social media understand the importance of using twitter regularly. If you own a brand or you simply want to stay updated about what’s happening around you, then being on twitter is the way to go.

Ever since I got on twitter I’ve tested a number of applications on the Mac that allows you to update twitter and read your feed instantly without the need to visit their website. Some of these applications are Twitterrfic, TweetDeck, Twhirl, etc., I’m not telling you what I didn’t like about those applications, but I will tell you what I like about Tweetie.

Tweetie lets you be up to date on what’s happening on your twitter feed, much like other applications, it lets you post, reply, and re-post any tweet from your friends. This is very convenient because you don’t have to stop what you are doing and launch a web browser to check what your friends are up to, the application is sitting right there on you desktop.

A large number of twitter applications for the iPhone were released the minute the iPhone SDK was available, but one of them became an instant hit. Tweetie for the iPhone was a hit despite being one of the applications for the iPhone that had no free version, everyone who tried it loved it, I never got my hands on it but people like Cali Lewis from GeekBrief.tv has talked about the applications numerous times on their show.

The guys from tweetie announced a desktop version of the application for the Mac, I downloaded the free version, the one with ads. The ads are not intrusive at all, they go by just like the rest of your feed items do. The layout is clean and the controls are very intuitive, it’s very much like an Apple app. For more information visit www.atebits.com/tweetie-mac/, they have a lot of information about what you can do with Tweetie, including a video.

The software is great, the paid version is just 14.95 until May 4th after that it will go up to 19.95 US Dollars. I suggest you to take a look at the application, download it, test it, if you like it, just to support the developer, get the paid version, I recommend it.

Of course you need to be on twitter to make use of this application, twitter is free. If you wonder how twitter can help you, leave me a comment on this article and I will make a big effort to convince you. Don’t forget to follow me on Facebook as well, I’m trying to make a LwEEs.com Fan page for my community, which will be awesome.

To summarize the news, facebook launched new terms of service on which they explicitly said that they own you. Sorry, I tend to exaggerate sometimes, the terms of service covered almost anything you do or post to facebook even when and if you delete your profile. What this means is that facebook has the rights to use anything you post on your facebook page without asking you permission first.

Let’s make clear that this is a common practice in web communities, the problem is that facebook’s language on their terms of service was so vague that it made it sound like they owned and have the right to anything you do on your profile forever. This resulted in criticism so bad that facebook backed down removing the newly added terms of service and reverting back to their old terms of service.

Some people around the web started promoting the deletion of your facebook profile, a little over reaction I think. Other complaint in different media outlets like their blogs, their profiles on services like twitter, etc, this even made it to the news, several news channels reported on this which tells us that Facebook is very deep in our life. With this in mind I started asking myself several questions, 1) What if facebook disappeared?, 2) What if you lose control of your media?, 3) What if you lose it all?

What if facebook disappeared?

Do you have a copy of everything on your facebook profile? More applications, especially mobile applications, have access to facebook these days. This allows people to take pictures on the go and upload them to services like facebook, Flickr, etc., if you then erase the media from your device, what are you left with. I see more people making this mistake, leaving everything on facebook’s hands and believing that facebook will always be there is silly. The solution is simple, always, always load your images to your computer first, make sure you have a back up scheme in order for your computer and then upload your images wherever you want.

What if you lose control of your media?

Let say you take a picture that you are planning to profit from it, something like a sunset, a beautiful bird, anything; then you start selling the picture, it becomes famous but you forgot that it was once uploaded to your facebook account. Then what, well, facebook has the right to use the picture to promote their service and there is nothing you can do about it. This craziness can get to anyone and if you don’t act with care you can lose control of your media very easily.

What if you lose it all?

For this last example lets say that your house burn down or it gets burglarized, these are both really bad things to happen to anyone. If this were to happen to you, isn’t it great to at least have some of your memories on the web. That’s exactly what having your media in a place like facebook allows you to do. If all your photos live on the web you are good to go in case of a disaster. My point it’s exactly that living in the web has its pros and cons, whatever you do just don’t go crazy deleting your facebook account until a final draft of their terms of use is released to the public.

Have questions? Try me, dare to ask, if you find that I didn’t answer one of your facebook question with this article, leave your questions in the comments section of this post. Remember that you can follow me on facebook and on twitter.

My sister is hilarious, yesterday she posted a comment on her own MySpace account the almost kill me. She wrote, “Warning, friends with no hands will be deleted.” Immediately her friends started writing to her saying hi or whatever, I found the idea very cute but after doing some thinking around her motivations to do what she did, I asked myself how social my networking is.

Every time I hear about a new social networking platform, I head to the website and create an account. I just create a presence and sometimes I don’t even get to updated it as often as anyone would think. One example is my iMeem account, I created it and never even wrote my bio, it may very well be close by now. The idea is that if anyone that knows me creates an account on any of these new social site and looks for me, at least they find something.

When it comes to update these accounts, I just don’t do a good job. I try to simplify my life by adding picture to Flickr and getting links wherever possible so that I don’t have to upload them twice to different sites. I use different social sites for different purposes, for small rants I use Twitter, for links I use Pownce, for day-to-day stuff I use either MySpace or Facebook. I have a Jaiku account that feeds whatever I do on Twitter, and a Virb.com account that feeds from my blog.

I created a Bebo account that I never pay attention to, I have an account with Digg with one friend that I only use, well for Diggs. This is why I think my social networking skills suck, at least on the web. I update my profiles like once every two weeks, I barely say hi to my friends unless I know is their birthday. I consider myself very unobtrusive, which is not bad, I think.

I would hate to have friends that write to me every single day, except for my mom, which she actually does write to me every day. Even when at the same time, I don’t mind anyone writing to me constantly, as I check my accounts maybe, once a week. What is your experience?

I have a Find Me At tab on my WordPress blog that holds my accounts for every single social site that I’m in, go ahead and add me. I promise I won’t be intrusive and I only leave comments that are of good taste. A final word, go out there and get as many friends as you can to subscribe to your social sites and keep them growing.
