MS Office 2010 Beta -PC Only

November 29, 2009 in Software by LwEEs

Logo_MSFTOffice2010_187x54Downloaded Office 2010 Beta to see what’s next on their idea of yet another update, at first glance, I like that I’m not seeing anymore the ribbon circle at the top left corner that the last version incorporated. That doesn’t mean that is not there, the ribbon button is being replace by a simple tab. The tabbed navigation at the top of the application is actually a good idea since this is how most web browsers work now and people are getting familiar with it.

The previous version of Office had the tabs but the ribbon button was what threw people off, I know many people that disliked the ribbon, very few felt comfortable with it. I still feel that the top of the screen is clutter with lots of icons. The organization at the top of the new MS Word 2010 is as crowded as its predecessor, and I couldn’t find a way to make is look like Office 2003. I’m sure there is a way but I’m just trying to see how difficult for a normal user is to have its way around the new Office 2010. Read the rest of this entry →

ecofont saves you more than ink

January 31, 2009 in Reviews, Software by LwEEs

ecofont_logoI stumble upon (not really, I don’t like that service) a post on ifacethoughts.net about ecofont, it grabbed my attention so I downloaded it immediately to test it. To my surprise, I’m really digging ecofont, here is the why, when, and hows of ecofont. On this though economic times we all can use a bit of savings, evens the smaller help helps a lot. With ecofont you can save up to 20% of ink (or toner) by printing on a font that uses less space than other popular fonts.

My wife is working on her bachelors degree so there’s a lot of printing for proofing, etc. by using ecofont we can save 20% of toner on our small brother laser printer. I was already buying a toner cartridge every 6 to 9 months, I guess that from now on it will be more like every 9 to 12 months (approx.) Read the rest of this entry →

Cyberduck FTP Transfer Software (Mac only)

November 23, 2008 in In My Head by LwEEs

cyberduckI’ve been blogging for more than two years now, while lately the tools of the trade have gotten better than ever before, it wasn’t always like this. Cyberduck is a piece of software (only for Mac OS X) that allows you to transfer files via FTP to and from a webhost, this is not the only use this software have, let’s take a look at some of the features I use the most.

Installing Cyberduck is as easy as you can imagine, just download the files from cyberduck.ch, and drag the software from the file image to your Application folder in Mac OS X and viola. When you visit the cyberduck.ch, the first thing you see in the front page is a full description of the software, alone with some other information about plugins, configuration option, etc.

Camouflage Your Desktop

March 22, 2008 in Software by LwEEs

camoformac.jpgFor bloggers and screen casters, camouflaging your desktop is a very important task. Is a pain to start deleting or hiding your icons and programs every time you are going to show a screen capture of your desktop to anyone, fortunately there are a couple of solutions for you (for us.)

Camouflage by Brik Software at briksoftware.com is a great choice to do just that, if you are like me you probably have a messy desktop, stuff that you are currently working on and they need to stay where they are. If you have to show anyone your desktop, you can at anytime run Camouflage and hide your messy desktop with the convenience of being able to bring all back once your done.

One of the downside of the application is that it’s available only for Mac, no Windows or Linux version is available. Another great feature that its missing is the ability to hide icons, wouldn’t be great to have this app selectively show only the icons you want people to see. I guess you could hide the entire dock, or maybe there is some sort of application that takes care of this, but convenience is king.

This application has a couple of options or settings that makes it really cool, one is the ability of changing the wallpaper. If you are a fan of ladies without much clothes, you can hide them with one simple click and bring them back once your done. I’m not saying that this is the only use, but you get the point. Maybe you have a background with your company logo that you want people to see when you are showing off your desktop.

Once you activate the application, you can call all your files on your desktop by double-clicking on your main desktop. A finder window will open up revealing all your messy desktop items, you can change this option to a single-click but what’s the point of that.

Find this application by visiting www.briksofware.com, its totally free. Also, check other application they have available for sale, if you like Camouflage for Mac you make a small donation if you feel inclined.

I would like to know if anyone knows of a similar program for other platforms, that way we can share the love with those of you who use Windows or Linux. Also, if you know of a similar application but with different or better features, leave a comment to spread the word.
