Trying Wordpress 2.3 Beta1

August 28, 2007 in Technology by LwEEs

I downloaded and installed Wordpress 2.3 Beta1 today, but not on this site. I created a separate install to try it out, I’m no expert to it looks pretty much the same to me. I navigated every page and the only thing that I notice immediately is that the tag functionality does not have a tag cloud. If I don’t have a tag cloud plug in to go with the integrated tag system, trust me I won’t be using it. The elegance and web 2.0 features of a tag cloud is something that I enjoy a lot on my site.

The other thing that I notice was that the blogroll has it own category organizer, I think this is a cool feature for those who have different categories of links. I did not load anything else, but I will be playing with it before applying it to my live website. Some other feature that I’m excited for but that I haven’t tested yet are, plugin and core update notifications, faster JavaScript’s and SEO friendly URL redirection.

The update notification will be a great addition to Wordpress, I spend lots of time during the week ensuring that my applications are updated and they have no security flaws. I know there are plugins that handle this functionality but often the database they reside is out of date, I prefer something native running inside Wordpress. As for the faster JavaScript’s, what I’m really concern is about size. Some .js extensions from Wordpress are really heavy causing slow loads when the plugins that are calling it are heavy in code too.

SEO friendly URL redirection is always a welcome feature, I actually use several SEO packages myself to ensure that sites like Google, Yahoo, Technorati, etc. have good access to my content. Expect more from me on Wordpress related news and reviews, if you have a request, comment, or need to correct any of my content feel free to leave a comment on this post. Thanks for reading.
